England's
National Elite Champion Jack Bateson claimed gold medal at the British
Championships but could not find any rhythm in his Light Flyweight
(46-49kg) contest against the Philippines' Junior National Champion Jade
Bornea. The 17-year-old Filipino boxer won each round to secure the
Southeast Asian nation's first medal in Yerevan.
Four Turkish boxers advanced to the quarter-final stages with top hope, 17-year-old AIBA Junior World Championships silver medallist Cengiz Onat facing England's Youth National Champion Oliver Simpson at Flyweight (52kg). It was the Englishman who raised his game for this one to triumph 13:7.
Germany's 18-year-old Brandenburg Youth Cup winner Omar El-Hag met Turkey's Ahmet Comert Youth Tournament silver medallist Hakan Dogan who began his boxing career in 2005 and the Berlin-based Bantamweight (56kg) was dominant in victory. His next opponent will now be Russia's AIBA Junior World Championships Magomed-Rashid Dzhabrailov.
Slovakia's last hope in Yerevan was Bocskai Memorial Tournament silver medallist Michal Zatorsky who battled Venezuela's Youth National Champion Luis Torres. Following an equal first round, the South American, who will be celebrating his 19th birthday next month, upped his efforts to beat the European opponent. Torres will now meet Mexico's National Olympiad bronze medallist Raul Curiel Garcia in the semi-finals.
Greece's new hero, Strandja Memorial Tournament bronze medallist, Alexandros Tsanikidis eliminated top favourite Sergey Sobylinskiy of Russia in his last outing and following that success, he triumphed over China's Wang Qingqiu. For a medal spot, he met Cuba's Light Welterweight (64kg) No.1 Kevin Hayler Brown and came back from a point deficit to record an unexpected victory .
Two talented fighters from the American continent met in that same weight category with the Dominican Republic's Panamerican Youth Champion Carlos Adames and Guatemala's 17-year-old two-time Central American Champion Lester Martinez going head-to-head. The talented Guatemalan boxer reached his career highlight with his triumph over Adames which means he bagged at least a bronze in Yerevan.
Two gold medal contenders met in the light welterweight class where Lithuania's top boxer Algirdas Socikas Tournament winner Eimantas Stanionis and Azerbaijan's European Youth Champion Parviz Baghirov had to fight for the place in the semi-final. Baghirov started better and led by 3:1 after the first round therefore Stanionis had to give up his planned tactic which was the best way to the glory for the Azeri star. The final verdict of their bout was 13:7 to Parviz Baghirov.
Netherlands' Golden Gloves of Vojvodina Youth Tournament winner Wouter Djokic needed only one further step for the historical Dutch medal in Yerevan but he was defeated by China's two-time National Youth Champion 18-year-old Zhang Zhidi who came from Jiangsu Province to the event. Their battle was more than a tactical one in which the Chinese ringside was better but Djokic was the youngest participant of the whole championships and used the event as active preparation for the 2013 European Youth Championships which will be held in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Zhang's next rival will be the top favourite Akmalbek Kosimov of Uzbekistan who eliminated Kazakhstan's Klichko Brothers Youth Tournament winner Aitzhan Shleyev.
Kazakhstan's Daulet Baygabatov defeated Azerbaijan's AIBA Junior World Championships silver medallist Orkhan Mayilli in the final of the Pavlyukov Youth Tournament in Russia in April while they met again in the quarter-final stage of the AIBA Youth World Championships in Yerevan. On their re-match in Yerevan Baygabatov repeated the same victorious performance and secured Kazakhstan's first medal in the championships. The Central Asian boxer's next rival will be Ukraine's Oleksandr Khyzniak in the semi-final.
Armenia's Klichko Brothers Youth Tournament bronze medallist Nikol Arutyunov began boxing in 2006 and almost had 100 bouts previously which experiences were enough to beat England's newcomer in the international level Steed Woodall. Arutyunov won each of the rounds and advanced to the semi-final as first from the host nation boxers. The Armenian boxer will now meet Russia's European Junior Champion Idris Shakhmanov who was too strong for Ireland's John Joe McDonagh.
The two top favourites of the heavyweight class met in the quarter-final stage of the championships in Yerevan. Russia's European Junior Champion Andrey Stotskiy did not lost any contest since April 2011 while his Asian rival Uzbekistan's AIBA Junior World Champion Oybek Sharipov's last defeat was in July 2010. The Russian heavyweight boxer found the best fighting distance very quickly and secured four points advantage after the first round and finally he could celebrate his victory over the top rival. His next rival will be Australia's London Olympian and AIBA Junior World Champion Jai Tapu Opetaia who defeated Cuba's Herich Ruiz.
At the super heavyweight class Russia's current Youth National Champion and European Junior Championships bronze medallist Ivan Kabatov was shocked by India's two-time Youth National Champion Narender Berwal in the first round when the Asian boxer secured five points advantage. Kabatov was not able to come back to the battle therefore tough Narender caused one of the biggest surprise in the quarter-finals. The Indian boxer's next opponent will be Germany's Florian Schulz who eliminated another favourite Yohandi Toirac of Cuba.
Tomorrow marks the rest day for the boxers with the action set to return on Thursday witht the semi-finals being played out.
